Frequently Asked Questions - Prenatal Paternity Test NYC
-
What is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test?A non-invasive prenatal paternity test in NYC determines the father of the baby before birth. The test checks free-floating fetal cells from the mother's blood and compares them to the potential father's DNA collected via a cheek swab.
-
How does NIPP work? The baby's DNA is found in the mother's bloodstream and separated from the mother's DNA. Then a comparison between the baby's DNA profile and the potential father's DNA is done with an accuracy of more than 99.9%.
-
Is the prenatal paternity test court-admissible?If you choose a legal test, the results follow a strict chain-of-custody process and are court-admissible. Non-legal tests collected at home are not admissible in court.
-
How are DNA samples collected?DNA samples are collected through a blood draw from the mother and a cheek swab from the potential father. Other samples like cigarette butts or fingernail clippings can also be used for the father.
-
Are there any restrictions for paternity testing while pregnant?Yes. The mother must be at least 7 weeks pregnant. Testing cannot be done for twins or multiples, and testing is not possible if the potential fathers share a close biological relationship.
-
What samples can we accept from the mother? We can only accept a blood sample using our non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) kits.
-
What samples can we accept from the father? For legal cases, we accept buccal swab or blood samples. Non-legal cases can use various samples like fingernails after a simple test to check if they're usable.
-
Does the test determine the gender of the baby?Yes, the baby’s gender can be included in the report at no extra charge.
-
What does “non-invasive” mean? The test only needs a blood sample from the mother and a cheek swab from the father, posing no risk to the baby.
-
Will a previous pregnancy affect the outcome of a test? No, previous pregnancies do not affect the test results.
-
Is there a difference between your laboratory and other labs?Yes, we offer superior patient care, high accuracy, and strict quality control.
-
What does “over 99.9% accurate” mean? The results show a certainty of paternity greater than 99.9%, guaranteed and reviewed by Ph.D. DNA experts.
